Consultation and imaging

Dr. Rojas examines the area, reviews your x-rays and your medical history, and explains what she recommends and why.

A comfort plan

Local anesthesia for every procedure, plus nitrous oxide, oral or IV sedation if you want it. You’ll know the plan and the cost before we begin.

The procedure

We confirm you are fully numb before starting. If you feel discomfort at any point, we stop and give more local anesthetic, and continue only when you’re comfortable.

Aftercare and follow-up

You go home with written instructions and a follow-up visit to check your healing.

Nobody looks forward to surgery, so I don’t ask you to take it on faith. Before we schedule anything, I show you what I see on your x-rays, explain what each step is for, and tell you what recovery will feel like.

On the day itself, comfort comes first. If you feel anything, tell me — we pause, I add more anesthetic, and we go on only when you’re ready.

Building bone for implants

Not enough bone for an implant? It can often be rebuilt.

An implant needs a solid foundation, just like a natural tooth. After a tooth is lost — or after years of gum disease or wearing a denture — the jawbone can shrink. The American Academy of Periodontology explains that a ridge augmentation fills that missing area with bone or a bone substitute, and the bone is usually given four to 12 months to develop before implants go in; in some cases the implant can be placed during the same procedure. The upper back jaw is a special case, because the sinus sits just above the roots of the molars. A sinus lift gently raises the sinus floor and places graft material underneath it, creating room for new bone where an implant can be anchored. (AAP: Sinus Augmentation)

For grafting, Dr. Rojas uses Straumann® bone grafting material, which gives your body a framework to grow new bone. If you are planning to replace a tooth, it often makes sense to graft the socket at the time of the extraction — ask about it at your consult. What recovery looks like.

Your written instructions come first. In general, Cleveland Clinic advises the following after oral surgery — gums usually heal in about a month, while bone can take up to six months.

FIRST 48 HOURSRest and iceKeep your head elevated, use ice packs on the outside of your jaw for swelling, and skip exercise for at least 48 hours to lower the risk of bleeding.

EATINGSoft foods, gentle rinsingYogurt, soup, eggs, rice and mashed potatoes are easy choices. Avoid spitting and vigorous swishing, which can disturb healing.

Is Dr. Rojas an oral surgeon?+

Will I be awake during oral surgery?+

That’s up to you. Every procedure starts with local anesthesia. You can add nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation; with oral or IV sedation you stay relaxed and may remember little of the procedure. You’ll need someone to drive you home after oral or IV sedation.

How long does recovery take?+

Cleveland Clinic notes that most people feel like themselves again in about two to three days, gums usually heal in about a month, and bone can take up to six months. Bigger procedures, such as grafting, take longer.

Why do I need a bone graft before an implant?+

An implant needs enough healthy bone around it. If bone was lost to gum disease, a missing tooth, a denture or an injury, grafting rebuilds it. The AAP notes the graft usually develops for four to 12 months before the implant is placed, though sometimes both are done together.

What is a sinus lift?+

A sinus lift raises the floor of the sinus above the upper back teeth and places bone graft material underneath, so there is enough bone to hold an implant where molars used to be.
