Every periodontist is a dentist with extra specialty training. Board certification is an additional step that not every periodontist takes.
The American Board of Periodontology (ABP) describes certification as a personal and professional commitment to the standards of the specialty. Passing the exams is not the end of it: Diplomates must keep their certification through continuing education and periodic testing. Under the ABP’s current rules, that means earning continuing-education points every six-year cycle, taking part in the board’s ongoing question platform, and staying in good standing with licensing boards. I added sedation training in 2010 because I kept meeting people who had avoided the dentist for years out of fear — and whose gum problems had grown in the meantime. Anxious patients deserve the same specialty care as everyone else, and you don’t have to go through it tense.
My approach is simple: I measure first, I show you what I see, and I start with the gentlest treatment that can work. You get a plan and a cost before anything starts.
