Sedation may help if any of these are you.

These are the reasons patients most often tell us they have avoided replacing a missing tooth.

A strong gag reflex
Trouble sitting still through a long visit
Numbing that never seems to work fully
A fear of needles
Several implants or extractions needed at once

Your surgery day

From Davie to done, step by step.

1
The night before

Follow the eating and drinking instructions we give you. With oral or IV sedation you may need to limit food beforehand.

2
Arrive with your driver

Someone must take you home after oral or IV sedation. Plan for them to stay with you for a few hours.

3
Monitoring throughout

Our office holds a permit for conscious sedation, and the care team is trained in CPR and hands-on ACLS. Your vital signs are watched the entire time.

4
We pause if you feel anything

With or without sedation, if you feel discomfort we stop, give more local anesthetic, and continue only when you are comfortable.

5
Rest at home

Expect to feel drowsy for the rest of the day after IV sedation. Take it easy and follow your aftercare sheet.

From Dr. Rojas

I added IV and nitrous sedation training in 2010 because so many people who need care are too afraid to get it. Fear is not something to be embarrassed about. Tell me about it at the consult, and we will choose the level of sedation together before anything is scheduled.

You don’t have to go through implant surgery tense. You only have to get here.

Sedation is planned around your health, not just your nerves. Mayo Clinic lists local anesthesia, sedation and general anesthesia as the options for implant surgery, notes that you may need to limit eating and drinking beforehand, and advises having someone take you home after sedation. (Mayo Clinic: Dental Implant Surgery)

Recovery from the implant itself is usually modest. Cleveland Clinic describes slight discomfort and swelling that over-the-counter pain relievers can help with, and says most people feel like themselves within a week or so. (Cleveland Clinic: Dental Implants)

Davie and Hollywood are both in Broward County (Broward County municipal directory). Many of our sedation patients also come from Pembroke Pines; see every city on our service areas page. To learn how implants are planned, start with our dental implants page, or ask about TeethXpress® if you are missing most of your teeth.

FAQ

Sedation questions from Davie patients

Will I be asleep during implant surgery?+

Not fully. With IV conscious sedation you stay awake but deeply relaxed, and you may remember only a little of the visit afterward. The level can be adjusted during surgery.

Do I really need someone to drive me home?+

Yes, after oral or IV sedation. You will be too drowsy to drive safely. With nitrous oxide alone, the effects wear off quickly once the mask is removed, so you can usually go about your day.

I’m afraid of needles. Can I still be sedated?+

Yes. Nitrous oxide is breathed through a mask and oral sedation is a pill, so neither needs a needle to start. Local anesthetic is still used for the implant itself, but you receive it once you are already relaxed.

Can several implants be placed in one sedated visit?+

Often, yes. Because you are relaxed, more can usually be done in a single appointment, which can mean fewer trips from Davie. Your plan depends on your bone and health.

Is sedation safe for everyone?+

Not for everyone. Some health conditions and medications make certain types unsuitable. Bring your medication list so Dr. Rojas can review it before choosing an option.

Does insurance cover sedation?+

Coverage varies by plan. We verify your benefits, file claims for you, and offer CareCredit for those who qualify plus our in-house dental plan.
