Loose dentures · failing bridges

Dental Implants in Pembroke Pines, FL

A denture that slips when you eat, or a bridge that keeps coming loose, is a common reason Pembroke Pines patients call us. Board-certified periodontist Dr. Tamara Rojas uses implants to anchor new teeth — removable or fixed — at her office in Hollywood.

Four ways implants replace dentures and bridges.

The right choice depends on how many teeth you are missing, your bone, and whether you want teeth you can take out to clean.

REMOVABLESnap-in overdentureA denture that clicks onto attachments on the implants. It stays put while you eat and talk, and comes out for cleaning.
REMOVABLEBar-retained overdentureThe implants are joined by a bar, and the denture clips onto it for extra stability. It still comes out for cleaning.

From failing teeth to a new arch

How a full-mouth case usually unfolds.

1
Evaluate what can be saved

Some teeth may be worth keeping with gum treatment. Dr. Rojas measures before recommending any extraction.

2
3D scan and design

Our in-office CT scan shows where the bone is strongest, which guides how many implants you need and where.

3
Extractions and implant placement, with sedation

With IV sedation, more work can usually be done in a single appointment.

4
Healing, then your final teeth

Once the implants have fused, the final denture or bridge is attached — often in partnership with your general dentist.

Gum care, too

A periodontist for Pembroke Pines: gum disease treatment and implants.

Dr. Rojas is a periodontist — a dentist who specializes in the gums and the bone that hold your teeth. Pembroke Pines patients see her for bleeding or receding gums as well as for implants, and many need both: gum problems are treated first, so a new implant starts out surrounded by healthy gums.

GUM DISEASEPeriodontal therapyYour gums are measured first, then treated with the gentlest option that can work, usually starting with a deep cleaning. Periodontal therapy →

From Dr. Rojas

When someone comes in with a loose denture, I don’t start by talking about a full set of new teeth. I start by measuring the bone and the gums, and by asking how you want to live with your teeth — do you want something you can take out at night, or something that stays in?

Then I lay out a plan and a cost before anything starts.

Mayo Clinic notes that implants can be a good option when dentures or bridgework fit poorly, and describes both removable teeth that snap onto implant-supported attachments and fixed teeth that you can’t take out for cleaning or sleep. (Mayo Clinic: Dental Implant Surgery)

Whichever you choose, the gums around implants still need care. The FDA stresses that regularly cleaning the implant and surrounding teeth is very important for long-term success, and advises telling your provider right away if an implant feels loose or painful. (FDA: Dental Implants)

FAQ

Dentures, bridges & full-arch questions

My denture keeps slipping. Can implants help?+

Yes. Even a few implants can anchor a denture so it snaps in place. Dr. Rojas will check your bone and your current denture at the consult and explain what is possible.

Should I choose removable or fixed teeth?+

Removable overdentures come out for cleaning. Fixed teeth feel more like natural teeth but are cleaned in place. Dr. Rojas explains the trade-offs for your mouth.

Can a failing bridge be replaced with implants?+

Often. If the teeth holding the bridge are failing, implants can carry a new bridge on their own. The 3D scan shows whether bone in that area is sufficient or needs grafting.

How many implants does a full arch need?+

Cleveland Clinic says a full arch is usually supported by four to six implants. Your exact number depends on your bone and the type of teeth you choose.

Can I be sedated for a long full-mouth procedure?+

Yes. We offer IV conscious sedation, oral sedation and nitrous oxide. You will need someone to drive you home after IV or oral sedation.

Will I be without teeth while I heal?+

Not necessarily. Cleveland Clinic notes that a temporary tooth may be used while an implant heals in some cases. Dr. Rojas will explain which temporary option fits your plan at the consult.
