Active gum disease is a common reason implants are delayed. Dr. Rojas treats it here with periodontal therapy.

“Not a candidate” often means “not yet.”
Cleveland Clinic lists active or untreated gum disease, unmanaged diabetes, severe jawbone loss and smoking among the reasons an implant may not be a good idea. Most of those can change. Gum disease can be brought under control. Bone can often be rebuilt. Blood sugar can be managed with your physician.
Smoking deserves a frank word. The FDA says smoking may affect healing and decrease the long-term success of an implant, and that problems may be more likely with uncontrolled diabetes. We will talk through both openly at your consult rather than skip past them.
If another office has already given you a plan, bring it, along with any x-rays. Dr. Rojas will review it, take her own measurements, and explain where she agrees and where she would do things differently. If nerves are part of what has held you back, IV, oral and nitrous sedation are available for grafting and implant surgery. I was told I don’t have enough bone. Is an implant still possible?+
Often, yes. Bone grafting can rebuild the site. Larger grafts usually need several months to heal before the implant is placed, so ask us for a realistic timeline.
Can I get an implant if I have gum disease?+
Not while it is active. The infection is treated first, usually starting with a deep cleaning. Once your gums are stable, implant planning can begin.
I smoke. Will that stop me from getting implants?+
Not automatically, but smoking can affect healing and long-term success. Dr. Rojas will explain your specific risk and what cutting back or quitting around surgery can do.
Am I too old for dental implants?+
There is no upper age limit. Your overall health, bone and gums matter far more than your age.
Can you give me a second opinion on another office’s plan?+
Yes. Bring your treatment plan and any recent x-rays. We take our own measurements and explain your options in plain language.
What should I bring to a candidacy visit?+
Your photo ID, insurance card, a list of medications (including blood thinners and diabetes medicines) and any recent x-rays or a referral from your dentist.
