Periodontal disease is a chronic condition that results in loss of attachment affecting the part of the body that keeps teeth in your jaw.  Periodontitis is typically painless but can be associated with a dull achy pain or in rare instances, acute pain.  Periodontal disease occurs when there is an accumulation of bacteria on the tooth and root surface.  One in four adults suffers from periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can be treated surgically and non-surgically.   The primary goal of periodontal treatment is removal of bacterial contaminates from tooth and root surfaces to prevent a human immunologic response.  Additional elective periodontal plastic procedures are done by periodontist as well such as smile lengthening and tooth coverage.

Dr. Tamara Rojas is a board certified periodontist who has practices in Hollywood for over 11 years.  Dr Rojas attends numerous workshops and seminars every year to learn the latest cutting edge procedures in the subject of periodontics and dental implants to better serve your periodontal needs. We use proven periodontal treatment methods to save your teeth that are predictable, and proven to work.  As mentioned above, periodontal therapy can be surgical or non-surgical and can be necessary or esthetic.  Non-surgical therapy has been effective and is the only treatment necessary for some patients diagnosed with chronic generalized mild periodontal disease.  Sometimes non-surgical therapy is used in our practice to prolong the life of teeth that periodontal surgical therapy cannot save. Periodontal surgery is a common treatment to remove unseen and hard to reach bacteria from teeth that has grown and hardened over time and progressed down the root affecting the skin, connective tissue and bone.  Attachment loss is always associated with periodontal disease.  The severity of the attachment loss can differ from tooth to tooth within the same mouth.

Periodontal evaluations measure the amount of attachment loss in millimeters.  It is diagnosed as chronic or acute; localized or generalized; and mild, moderate, or severe.  Once you have been diagnosed a treatment is tailored to your mouth according to your specific needs and the amount of attachment loss you have.
